Could they make it look any more like the Israeli flag, without being obvious?

Isn't Greater Israel set to annex part of Iraq? I forget the verse, but somewhere it is written.

I imagine this flag is just a demo to get people used to the blue and white, no doubt the release candidate will have a star of David, and maybe a little silhouette of an Arab in chains.

A CPA art director did this. Note the use of corporate blue and gold. All marketish, non offensive and check it out - no Muslim Green or that terrible socialist and panic inducing red.

This bullshit is AIPAC chloroform on fabric.

I think I understand the symbolism of the land between the Tigris and Euphrates at the bottom, but what's up with that moon thing?

If the backgound were red instead of white it would look like the flag of one of the more obscure Soviet republics.

The 2 blue stripes are supposed to be the rivers, the yellow stripe is supposed to be the Kurds. The Kurds are not pleased.

If the yellow stripe is the Kurds, then should they add

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
to symbolize the teeth in the jaws of the Iraqui authority?

The crescent moon is an Islamic religious symbol. Comparable to the Star of David in Judaism. Or the cross in Christianity. Maybe there will be a Blue cross on the new flag Junior designs for us next January after he's innaugurated "President for Life"

<snip>

The only country in the Middle East with blue stripes in its flag is Israel, which has a Star of David on a field of white between horizontal blue bands.

Council spokesman Hameed al-Kafaei said the designer, artist Rifat al-Chaderchi, was asked to touch up the color of the crescent, perhaps to a darker blue or a different color. The final version will be announced later this week.

<snip>

But the overhaul of a national symbol raised some complaints -- particularly since it came from U.S.-appointed leaders. U.S. administrators previously tried to alter the Saddam-era flag by dropping the words "Allahu akbar" -- "God is great" -- but Iraqis refused to abide by the change.

<snip>

The old Iraq flag had red and black bands across the top and bottom, and a white band in between with three green stars. During the 1980s Iran-Iraq war, Saddam added the words "Allahu akbar" to boost the religious credentials of his secular regime.

<snip>

"After we added 'Allahu akbar' to the old flag, we became more proud of it. The crescent of the new flag does not represent Islam," he said, adding: "The old one had nicer colors."

In Arabic nations, the colors of flags have widely recognized meanings.

Green, white and black denote Islam -- harkening back to the battle banners of the medieval Islamic dynasties of the Fatimids, Ummayads and Abbasids. Green is said to have been the prophet Muhammad's favorite color; the Saudi, Libyan, Algerian and Mauritanean flags are completely or largely green.

Islamic crescents in Arab heraldry are usually green or red.

Red, meanwhile, points to Arab nationalism. It was the color of the Sharif Hussein, who led the Arab revolt against Ottoman Turkish rule in the early 1900s, and he added it to a flag of green, white and black stripes to create a symbol of pan-Arabism.

Hussein's banner was the basis for the Jordanian, Palestinian and Syrian flags -- as well as the old Iraqi one.

The only Arab League members to have any blue in their flag are the African nations of Djibouti and Somalia.

My wife had on the news when they showed the image, so I saw it briefly yesterday. Among the many thngs that the complete idiots in the Bush administration don't seem to understand is that when an occupying power imposes a new flag upon a conquered people, it will be resisted strenuously.

It's a marriage of tragedy and farce, and it's not funny in the least.

AIPAC 3:16 -- Is 3:16 for the date of the conqest, 3/16/2004?

They stole the DFA colors, too, blue, white and gold--although it is a pale blue, not deep blue.

The white in the flag must be for surrender.

Blue, white and gold are corporate colors. Meant to imply a trust in money and banking. Basic design color theory, and no small reason that you see them in this Invader imposed toilet rag of a thing they call a flag.

This flag dosn't represent anything but the hurbis of the Coalition Authority. It looks like, and has all the validity of a corperate logo. Less, since a corperation can make it's colors mean something through skillful making of money augmented by moral conduct. All these colors can ever mean is 'We, the people of the colonial authority, own your ass.' and will be treated accordingly.

This flag dosn't even offer affirmative answers to the questions "Can you imagine people charging into battle waving these colors?", "Can you imagine the coffins of fallen heros draped in this flag?" or even "Would anyone mark turf (an embassy, a battleship ect..) with this banner?"

Apparently the final design came down to a coin toss. Here's the runner up:

Good Lord! What is this monstrosity? It looks like a corporate, Easter egg/Israeli flag! It bears no resemblance to what I think of as the Iraqi people at all!

What happened to the green, black, white, and red?

I don't think it is a question of Iraqis accepting it. What the Iraqis think of it matters no more than what they think of having their children's heads blown off.
